Throughout the planning process South Somerset District Council insisted this building would be eco-friendly but, now the building is constructed, we see that these were false platitudes used to detract from planning objections. The truth is that this is a massive CONCRETE structure, not the Co2 absorbent 'ModCell Lime' building planned - concrete walls ‘disguised’ by external wooden cladding. No straw bale construction as planned or natural clay tiles! A massive raft foundation of reinforced concrete adds to the environmental pollution caused by not using materials in the plans originally passed by SSDC Planning Dept in 2010.
South Somerset District Council called this their ‘Green’ Hub. But actually it’s a Co2 contributor!

Yeovil Country Park - Watchdog
Why did Watchdog campaign against building here?
- In 1988, SSDC promised never to build on any more open space here once Goldenstones plans were approved.
- In 2010 despite 117 letters and 700 petitioners objecting, SSDC pressed ahead with their own planning application
- Alternative sites for Rangers Building were discounted - see Option 3 of Location possibilities in the pdf document download.
- Maple trees and Silver Birches, featured in 2013 winning GB and Ireland photo, have been felled.
- This unique ‘ROYAL’ flat landscape scarred by 250m2 footprint of this building 18 feet high taking up a plot size of 550m2 (0.055 hectares)
- The Town Council recommend refusal in accordance with planning rules - a year later they did a U-TURN!
- Local residents were given less than 10 weeks to object
- No public consultation about the location of building
- Public wanted cafe and toilets at the chrildrens’ playground 400 metres away (according to Council’s own research!)
- One quarter of the building has light industrial usage
- SSDC claimed this was a small building but it will cost £353,000 (estimate 2010) - See Dimensions above
- Hedges screening car park were removed during April 2012
- Diverse groups of people who used the land will now lose this green facility
- The future of this lost land and Goldenstones uncertain due to its money-making redevelopment to raise funds for a Sports Zone
- Formerly a quiet location, this will now allow parties of up to 79 people.
- Noise will emanate from a heat pump as well as public and vehicular usage
- Natural drainage of meadow compromised by new landscape banking to Dodham Brook. This will mean the meadow will take longer to drain.
- Important documents omitted from SSDC web site affecting planning decision-making process.
- Ironically, a National Heritage grant denied Yeovilians their own park heritage!
